“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20
Diaspora is entering it’s third year and we just had two more baptisms! This is so fun. It’s so very exciting to see our dear people taking this step of faith. Standing up to say that they are committed to Jesus and publicly declaring their faith.
First time during our first summer was Guelph Lake — fun doing this at the beach and it certainly caught the attention of beach-goers. Great worship and followed by a picnic.
Second time, also in summer was in Kelly’s hot tub — Warmer, definitely warmer. Quite nice actually and very exciting with the hospitality in the house and then baptizing on the back deck and enjoying a potluck lunch with families and friends.
These baptisms, our third and fourth were in winter and thus in a portable baptismal tank in a kitchen — only the dunkees got completely wet as the dunkers had to stand beside the tank. Bit of logistics transporting the tank with a borrowed van and trailer, filling, emptying and such. But again, surrounded by friends and family it had that home-y feel. Again potluck lunch to follow. We love to ‘break bread” together as well as lasagna, salad, desserts etc.
Diaspora is all about making disciples. As Jesus referenced in Matthew 28, part of being a disciple is being baptized and learning and growing as a disciple who will make other disciples. Disciples makes disciples.
When Jesus said, we are to teach “them to obey everything I have commanded you” that included making more disciples and baptizing them and so on and so on.
Elsewhere, for example in John 15, Jesus referred to his disciples needing to produce fruit. Sometimes people make the mistake of equating that with the fruit of the Spirit. We are supposed to develop the fruit of the Spirit in ourselves but I don’t think that’s what Jesus is talking about here. The fruit produced by fruit is actually more fruit. Fruit carry seeds that grow into new trees or plants and produce more fruit and so on. Disciples making more disciples.
And then we baptize and make more disciples who make more disciples and so on and so on. And it’s so fun and exciting!
